MTA Design Build ESI


The Enhanced Station Initiative was a Governor Cuomo plan to upgrade 36 metro station located throughout the 5 boroughs of New York City, using a Design Build process.  Package 3 of the ESI included Central Park West Stations at 72nd Street, 86th Street, Cathedral Parkway–110th Street, and 163rd Street–Amsterdam Avenue.  The stations opened in September 10, 1032 as part of the city-operated IND, running between Chambers and 207th Street.  Construction of the original line was $191.2M.

The $111 million contract went to the Design Build team led by ECCO III Enterprises in October 2017.   Stations were closed for only 4 months each in 2018; all design and construction was completed in 13 months.  An extraordinary undertaking as the first DB project MTA embarged upon.

Scope: The stations underwent a complete overhaul; Updates included cellular service, Wi-Fi, USB charging stations, interactive digital service advisories and maps. ESI was meant to enhance station appeal with sophisticated systems and transparent entries. Custom assemblies include glass handrails and partitions, new stair handrails with integral stair lighting, new canopies, bespoke ceilings, entry gates and wayfinding; new coordinated lighting, transit wireless overhead fixture.

L+AA Role:
Responsible for 86 th Street and Central Park West Station renovation and all Bespoke detailing.
