Pine Island House

The Owners have a significant collection of original Arts and Crafts art pieces strongly influenced by the regional vernacular of the South Carolina low country. We designed low overhanging rooflines and continuous verandas into which the rural landscape meanders. Through the beauty of craft, we strove for a hand-built home.

The house was sited to capture the breezes and surrounded by decks to mediate between inside and outside. The house opens up with a system of screens and windows that slide into walls and floors allowing the structure to fully embrace the landscape.

Reclaimed white oak, salvaged from a barn, is used for roof trusses.   “Sinker Cypress” logs brought up from the bottoms of rivers and ponds are fashioned into columns.  We also used recycled red cedar siding, butternut, white pine and danto for interior millwork, cabinetry and furniture.
